A Heavy Sigh and a Thank You

I have come to a place and a realization as of late that I can no longer pursue monogramming as a business. Why? Simply because my own 2 little Sniglets need a little more mommy than I have been able to give them when I'm trying to juggle. So it is with a heavy sigh that I'm announcing an indefinite - very lengthy - perhaps forever - break. It has been very fun, and I want to say a huge "Thank You!" for allowing me the privilege to create for your little ones. I will continue to embroider and sew for my own children and for personal gifts, but my life has simply become too full to continue to take on jobs. I will however, continue to share projects and inspiration - perhaps even a tutorial here and there. Thank you again for all of your support and encouragement!

My Nana gave Anabelle this sweet outfit, knowing full well I would have to customize it! It's a really sweet A-line top with bloomers from Remember Nguyen (pronounced "Remember When" - maybe you all are smarter than me, but I butchered this one for years!) anyway, I'm a big fan of this brand. It's timeless, affordable, and most of it is begging to be personalized! If that's not enough to make you love them, just be sure to read the message on each of their tags...

Getting ready to open our booth has been fun, and by "our" I mean me and my mom. That's right, Mom is partnering with Sniglets again. For all of you, that means she will have a great selection of vintage items available again, as she is the master collector/finder of wonderful baby novelties from the past. I've always been a big fan of mixing new with old, for me, it just feels right! Speaking of finding, what do you think of my new friend up there? This sweet little mannequin is just one of the fruits of mom's great treasure hunting skills. I can't wait to use "Sniglet" in the booth!
Today I received my large order of delicious embroidery blanks, it's the loveliest package of gowns, long sleeve onesies, bibs, and hats... yum! Now I just have to decide what to put on them. This is where I need some help from some of you mothers of boys, I am planning on having a Euro themed design for the girl babies (I won't say what yet) and I want to have a somewhat coordinating design for baby boys. I need your vote! For your newborn baby boy, would you rather have a cute European scooter, or a VW Bug style car? My mind thinks in "girl" ALL the time, so please be kind enough to drop your vote in the comments (all moms, even those with just girls, please vote!).
Mom and I have also been busy brain storming about our display. In my mind, it is going to be just adorable. I picture it as a mixture of shabby chic, beachy, and preppy (which is pretty much the way I would like my entire world to look). The two of us think so much alike in the display department that its actually a bit scary. I don't want to say too much, but I'll leave you with a few mental pictures... robin's egg blue, brown stripes, silhouettes!
Now if my machine will just behave a little better than it did last night, I should be ready to open up shop in no time! For those of you who embroider, I'm sure you've encountered the hell that is the "thread nest". In my cyber search for help (at 3:00 AM) I found that there are virtually no helpful tips online concerning thread nests. To help remedy this, I'll share mine... cuss! And when your machine finally does come around, force it to stitch out some old lady flowers, just to prove to you that it's working again. Let's just say that now my machine knows who's boss! Seriously though, I spent an hour and a half tightening screws, oiling, blowing out lint, re-threading, changing needles, etc. before I finally found a broken thread crammed in a path in the bobbin case. I'm happy to say that after all that, my good ole' Husky is working like a charm today. Thank goodness!

Announcements!

New things are happening around Sniglets!

First: Sniglets now has its own clothing labels! This is something I've been wanting to see happen for a while, and business just got busy enough to justify the expense - so yippee!!! Second: The new labels say "Sniglets Co." instead of "Sniglets Baby Boutique", this decision was made to allow my business to expand into toddler sizes and beyond in the future. However, since I only sell things for baby on Etsy, I will continue to operate under the baby boutique name in my Etsy shop.

Third: Sniglets is now an official business, recognized by the great State of Florida. I am fully registered and therefore must collect sales tax on all sales made inside the sate. That even includes Florida residents who purchase from me on Etsy. It's cool to be so "official", but it sort of stinks too ;P

Fourth: Those of you who follow both of my blogs will notice that this "announcement" is posted on both, why? I am working to "marry" my blogs over the course of the next year, why? Because... a) Sniglets has become very integrated with my family's life b) My business is becoming far less blog dependant c) I'm just plain tired of writing two blogs, etc. My "A Little Bit of This Blog" is very close to my heart, I could just never close that one, so all of the Sniglets news will "move in" with the story of our family. I will continue to post on both for about a year, or until all of my business cards that say "snigletsbaby.blogspot.com" are gone :)

Fifth: I plan on opening up a booth at a local antique and children's boutique, I'm sure some of you know Three Chicks in Avondale, It's a really cute store. I've been a customer there for years, and if all goes as planned, I should have my booth "installed" by August 1st.

Sixth: I hope you will understand that as my official line expands, I will be taking on fewer and fewer custom orders. All items will of course still be able to be customized with baby's name or initials, but the majority of orders will need to be selected from the current seasonal catalog's available line. I will offer as many designs per season as I possibly can, and I HOPE to leave approx. 5 custom order slots available for friends and family each month. One of the few unfortunate things about business growth is that I have to think about large quantities now, and I simply will not be able to accommodate as many custom requests. It is, however, my desire to keep your needs a top priority in my business, my designs are built from inspiration from all of you. I ask that you continue to tell me what means the most to you and your little ones. You may see your design ideas in the next season's line!

3. Ordering and Purchasing
Since a variety of different vendors and companies will be represented, a variety of different purchase methods will be used. Some items will be available for immediate purchase, while others will be available for custom order. Vendors will be accepting different forms of payment including cash, check, and credit/debit card through PayPal.

Ok, that covers the general information, here are a few changes to my business (Sniglets Baby Boutique) that some of you may not be aware of yet…I no longer stock toddler size T’s. If you plan on placing orders for toddler aged children, please bring (or plan to provide at a later date) the appropriate size white T. for your little one (only up to size 4 please). I am, however, happy to share that Sniglets now carries a boutique quality line of infant onesies, gowns, bibs, and burpies for customization, I’m excited to show you everything on Saturday. I will also have a selection of my monogrammed paci clips for custom order.

Shirt For a Special Outing

One of my girl friends is taking her little guy to a Bob the Builder show soon. Luke just loves "Bob the Bubba" and anything construction, tools, etc. She asked me to help her make a special shirt for their mommy and son date. We went shopping together to pick out all of the supplies, and Erika hung out while me and my machine stitched out the design (that's a plus of doing this sort of work - an excuse for girl time!). We were both really excited about the result, but even more important, Luke was excited! Here is a little customer review...

It is April, and I am just now finding time to play with the sewing machine that Ben gave me for Christmas. This is what happens when you plug in Becoming Jane and sew until 4:00 am... a stroke of genius! I didn't use a pattern, just good old fashioned measuring and studying some pictures on Etsy. First thing this morning, I drove the dress (with Evie in it because she refused to take it off) to my mom's so that she could give me an "atta-girl!" I'm feeling pretty proud of my toddler couture and I am just itching to make some more! I already ordered some more fabric today!!!

Tonight I discovered a new to me (and fabulous I might ad) fabric site! Those of you who know me should be able to imagine the sort of hyperventilating that took place in front of my computer. Paci clips continue to be my number one seller on Etsy. This is a set that I just shipped out this afternoon. A couple of people have recently expressed that they love these clips, but their baby does not use a paci. To that I would like to say this... Anabelle is giving up on her paci too (as she has discovered her fingers) but has begun to love toys! In a restaurant the other day, I used her clip to attach her plastic keys, this bright idea only came to me after I had picked them up off the floor a gazillion times. It worked great and mommy and baby were both happy!

I was asked by a friend to contribute to a silent auction for Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. I only had a few days notice, but I was really excited to participate. Throughout the whole Sample Project, one very special little person stood by watching. She cheered for each design, she squealed over each little animal, she tenderly held every shirt. Of particular interest to her was the Lil Bird applique, which she lovingly referred to as a "ducklin" (southern twang and all). With each finished product came the same question, "Oh Mommy, is this one for me?", and with every asking of this question came the same answer, "Not this one, but I will make one for you soon". So my little one, here is a "ducklin" for you. Too little too late, and not enough to say how much I love you, or how much I treasure your support!

Putting Together a Gift

I put together a special gift set for a very sweet friend who is expecting her first boy! I coordinated a few of my favorite things, added a pack of my own baby's favorite pacies, wrapped it in brown paper and green string, and headed off to her surprise shower! I really like to make things for friends and their babies, I like to think about their family while I'm working. I usually use that time to pray for all of them too. I've been greatly blessed with many wonderful friends who have wonderful children, all of whom are very special to me and my own family!

Ok, in my opinion this design takes the cake! It's a good thing too, as I reserved the girl version for my own children (if I ever have time to make them!). I love the way he "spouts" out the name! Most of the Spring Project slots have been filled, just looking for a home for one lonely precious little frog :( If you have not given me a plain white T. yet, just get it to me as soon as you can. I'm going to start making the samples as soon as I get through this big upcoming weekend (Evie's birthday party and Anabelle's baptism). Those of you who have not received fabric samples yet, they're either coming or the design you chose does not have choices. It may be Christmas time, but spring is already "springing" at Sniglets! I'm preparing to make my spring and summer 2009 samples, and you can benefit from my massive undertaking by reserving sample design slots for your kids. Here is how it works...

Sign up for one of the designs listed below, provide me with a plain white T. shirt or onesie (flat front with no pocket) in your child's size, and pay just $4.00 to cover the cost of your materials. Upon signing up, I will e-mail a selection of fabric combinations for you to choose from. For less than the cost of purchasing a monogram you will receive a custom personalized (with your child's name) shirt for your little sniglet. I will keep the sample just long enough to take a picture for my web site and then it's yours to keep! I will make only one of each design (in some cases I will make both a boy and girl version) so sign up fast as I expect slots to fill very quickly. You can sign up under "comments", by e-mail, or by telphone.

I made these Turkey shirts to celebrate my children's first Thanksgiving with all of the new cousins on my husband's side of the family (little Anabelle being the newest). It was so much fun to have so many babies in one house! Far greater things have been accomplished in the amount of time that it took for me to make "this damn onesie" (I mean that in the most affection way). Seriously, I ruined two other plain white onesies before I successfully married these two simple applique designs (a mere square and an "A"). It seems easy enough - right? Apparently not. Anyway, after six hours of hard labor and a whole slew of words worse than "damn", I think this turned out pretty stinkin' cute. Now that I have mastered and conquered this hard core "stichery", I plan to do it again in countless color combinations. I just hope that Anabelle not only likes the letter "A", but the square as well!

During my recent down time (who am kidding - all I have is down time!) I've started planning my Spring 2009 designs for my etsy.com shop; new personalized appliqued T. shirts, hair bows, personalized burpies, new fabrics, the works! One of the things I'm most excited about starting this spring is a "design your own paci clip" offer! That's right - you pick the fabric, ribbon, font, and thread color. I'm still buying fabric and ribbon choices, but I promise to share as soon as I get it all together. One of my favorite things I've come up with so far is this little castle T., perfect for my little princess and yours! It will be available for purchase online in January (when my life sorts out and I can actually commit to things again - lol). I was at it again today, browsing the Internet, perusing for un-useful things to collect for Evie and Anabelle. I really just can't get past Jennifer Murphy's little animals, I think it's their sweet, handmade, vintage appeal - so nostalgic. I really love her original work, but I also love that she offers less expensive licensed reproductions. I'm dreaming of a trip to Savannah soon (before I get too pregnant) where I can expand the collection that I started last fall. Understand that I completely do not need to own any more chotchkies, but I will do it, I will go there and I will buy some, that's just the kind of girl I am!
